《中央画刊》1929年8月于南京、上海出版，周刊，由国民党中央宣传部主编，是南京《中央日报》的副刊。1931年10月22日停刊，停刊原因不详。当前馆藏1929年第2期至第16期、1930年第23期至第74期、1931年第75期至第116期。该刊于南京编印，每期8页，以漫画照片、配合文字说明，报导国内外大事及社会各界的活动情况，反映社会和人民生活。刊行各期还有国内外时事照片、体育动态、美术摄影、时事漫画集宣传画，几乎占版面的四分之一，照片拍摄者多有署名。一方面，国民党中央宣传部为了达到其宣传目的，以军事宣传为该刊的重点刊载内容，既有对国民党军队训练、建设情况的摄影照片和介绍，也有对国防建设等的动员和号召，比如《国军编遣委员会编遣实施会议开幕典礼摄影》、《军队要到边徼去》等等，以照片和漫画绘图两种形式相结合的办法报道军事新闻，宣传国防建设，推动当时的编遣实施又是其刊载内容的重中之重。另一方面，国内外时事照片和社会各界开展的活动介绍是该刊的又一重视对象，诸如《西湖博览会新建之木桥》、《华府会议国通过在华外国部局一律撤消》、《首都前方将士慰劳会》等等，介绍了大量国内政治新闻和社会各界的一些活动，具有一定的时事新闻性质。同时，该刊还注重宣传爱国主义精神，通过《已经收回的青岛难道还由他在境内作威作福吗？》、《没有用的非战公约》等内容对民众的思想态度加以引导，以达到舆论导向的目的和效果。此外，该刊还登有“旧诗新载”一栏，将有时代特色的新内容以旧诗形式展现出来，比如《人生》、《战士》等诗歌，也刊载了一些新式诗歌，比如《致战士》等内容。
从该刊1929至1931年出版的全部内容来分析，本刊作为南京《中央日报》的画报副刊，其目的和宗旨即在于为《中央日报》补充新闻照片材料，增强其为国民党中央宣传部宣传工作服务的效果，因此以宣传国民党军事建设、政府工作等内容为主，为研究当时国民党方面的军事史、新闻史等领域提供了一些可供补充佐证的参考史料，也对研究画报类副刊有一定的史料价值。
